Yesterday, Congressman Addison McDowell from North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District joined President Donald J. Trump at the White House for the signing of the HALT Fentanyl Act. This legislation permanently schedules fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs and provides law enforcement with tools to combat drug traffickers.
Following the signing, Congressman McDowell stated, “It was an honor to join President Trump at the White House as he signed the HALT Fentanyl Act into law. This isn’t just a policy issue for me, it’s deeply personal.” He emphasized that this marks a significant step in preventing fentanyl from affecting communities and expressed gratitude for President Trump’s leadership on this issue and border security.
Congressman McDowell has prioritized addressing the fentanyl crisis both locally in North Carolina and nationally. In May, he organized a roundtable with sheriffs and district attorneys from his district to discuss efforts against fentanyl.
He has also cosponsored several pieces of related legislation including:
– H.Res.359 – Supporting National Fentanyl Awareness Day in 2025
– H.R.2964 – Fight Fentanyl Act
– H.R.2383 – Protecting Kids from Fentanyl Act of 2025
– H.R.1569 – CATCH Fentanyl Act
– H.R.128 – Fentanyl is a WMD Act
– H.R.2351 – A directive for updating Coast Guard policy on medication use for drug overdoses
The HALT Fentanyl Act represents a victory for law enforcement, victims’ families, and Americans seeking action against the fentanyl crisis.
