The North Carolina Social Services Commission announced on April 8 that it will appoint a new member to the Davidson County Board of Social Services, with nominations being accepted from April 1 through May 1. All nomination forms must be received by 5:00 p.m. on May 1.
This appointment is important because the Board of Social Services plays a role in overseeing local social services programs and policies, which can affect residents across Davidson County.
Nomination forms are available at the local department of social services office or online at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services website. Completed forms should be mailed, faxed, or emailed to Danielle Upchurch at the N.C. Social Services Commission in Raleigh. Upchurch can also answer questions about the process by phone or email.
The announcement comes as education data show varying levels of college readiness among high school students in Davidson County. Of senior students taking the science portion of the ACT during the 2022-23 school year, only about one in five were considered ready for college according to state education data. Similar results were seen among juniors, with just over twenty percent meeting college readiness benchmarks in science according to state education data.
In reading, nearly one-third of both seniors and juniors met college readiness standards on their ACT tests according to state education data. Math scores showed that approximately twenty-three percent of seniors and twenty-four percent of juniors were considered ready for college-level work according to state education data.
The commission said completed nomination forms may be submitted by mail, fax, or email as listed in their official notice. The board’s future appointee will join efforts that could impact social service delivery throughout Davidson County.
