Senator Ted Budd, a Republican representing North Carolina, has recently used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and to honor the U.S. Marine Corps.
On November 8, 2025, Senator Budd attributed responsibility for the federal government closure to Democrats. He stated, “It’s Democrats who are keeping the government closed. We are ready to negotiate when the government is back open and providing the necessary services for American taxpayers.”
Two days later, on November 10, 2025, Senator Budd recognized the United States Marine Corps’ service in a post marking its anniversary: “For 250 years, the @USMC has served our Nation faithfully, deploying to every corner of the globe to engage & defeat our adversaries. From the Revolutionary War to battles across the Helmand desert, they have served with honor & distinction—representing the best of America.”
Later that same day, he referenced his efforts in Congress regarding legislation intended to end what he referred to as the “Schumer Shutdown,” stating: “Last night I voted for the 15th time to end the Schumer Shutdown. We’ll continue to work hard this week to get this to the President’s desk and ensure that we put the American people over political games.”
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass funding legislation or when such legislation is not signed into law by the president before existing appropriations expire. These events can lead to disruptions in federal services and furloughs for government employees.
Senator Budd’s reference to a “Schumer Shutdown” alludes specifically to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and reflects partisan disagreement over responsibility for resolving appropriations disputes.
The United States Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775. The organization celebrates its birthday annually and is recognized as one of America’s principal military branches.
