Senator Ted Budd addressed concerns about commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) in a series of posts on January 8, 2026. Budd, who represents North Carolina in the U.S. Senate, focused his comments on the dangers posed by unlawfully issued CDLs and criticized previous leadership at the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
In one post, Budd stated: “Across the country, we have seen horrible and often fatal tragedies because of erratic actions taken by truck drivers with these unlawfully issued licenses.” He continued to emphasize public safety concerns in another message: “It is incredibly dangerous to have individuals operating on North Carolina’s roads and highways using illegally issued CDLs.”
Budd also commented on administrative issues within the state agency responsible for licensing. On January 8, he wrote: “North Carolinians know all too well that for several years, under previous leadership, the North Carolina DMV has been a complete disaster, from long wait times to paperwork issues, and beyond.”
The senator’s remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny of commercial driver licensing processes across various states. Unlawful issuance of CDLs has raised national concern due to its potential impact on road safety.
