The stay-at-home order for Winston-Salem ended May 8 in connection with Gov. Roy Cooper's order expiring as the state begins to reopen.
Mayor Allen Joines extended the local order until May 7, according to the township website, to slow and stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The order was first set to end on April 16, WXII 12 previously reported.
Joines said that if the stay-at-home order wasn’t updated, the number of COVID-19 cases would increase by 50%.
He said, according to WXII 12 in a previous interview, “Again, we believe these strong actions, taken now, will allow us to manage the crisis and hopefully get to the end of the crisis much sooner than if we did not take the action.”
Forsyth Medical Doctor Joshua Swift provided insight on the breakdown of COVID-19 patients. Roughly 45% of people diagnosed in the county are 45-years-old and younger, which pushes the mandate for people to stay at home if they can, considering people older than 65-years-old are said to be at higher risk.
