Davidson College Athletics issued the following announcement on Aug. 19.
Aleia Gisolfi-McCready scored two goals, and Riley Patton provided the game-winner as the Davidson women's soccer team defeated Gardner-Webb 3-1 in Thursday's season opener at Alumni Stadium.
It's the third straight season the Wildcats have opened with a victory.
"Solid performance by the group tonight," said Davidson coach Adam Denton. "We started the game well and did some very good things, creating some opportunities and also controlling possession."
Gisolfi-McCready, a freshman from Lexington, Mass., put the Wildcats ahead in the 32nd minute by rebounding a Sophia Caruso shot and angling it into the bottom left corner. The Wildcats held that 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Patton's goal broke a 1-1 tie in the 78th minute, as her slow-rolling shot from deep left snuck into the right edge of the goal.
Gisolfi-McCready put the finishing touches on the win, scoring on a breakaway with 4:23 left.
Gardner-Webb's lone goal came on a Maddie Turlington penalty kick in the 73rd minute.
The start of the 7 p.m. contest was delayed an hour and 12 minutes by thunderstorms in the area.
