Davie County Public Utilities Receives Investment Award Grant

Daviecounty

Davie County recently issued the following announcement.

The Economic Development Association has granted the Davie County Public Utilities Department an investment award grant of $1,587,000. This award will support industry and business development in Davie County through the rehabilitation of transmission lines connected to the Cooleemee Water Treatment Plant, a designated Opportunity Zone.

"The project addresses a critical water infrastructure need to ensure that the citizens of Mocksville and Davie County will continue to have access to high-quality and affordable water service," said Johnny Lambert, Director of the Davie County Public Utilities Department. "Ensuring this will keep Davie County as a key contender for future residential and commercial growth."

Lambert goes on to explain that the application process was a group effort and could not have been done without key contributions from County Economic Development, finance, and utility staff, as well as support from community partners.

Through this group effort, a description of the technical project aspects, an assessment of potential environmental impacts and letters of support from town employers were sent for a formal review and selection process.

This award is a great achievement for the Public Utilities Department and all who played a part in its success. The grant funding will make a significant impact in the community for years to come.

"With this new water distribution piping, Davie County will be able to provide water to its customers as well as to the Town of Mocksville, to meet their forecasted future water demands. The expanded water distribution lines also facilitate the decommissioning of two water treatment plants that have reached the end of their useful lives, the existing Cooleemee Water Treatment Plant and the Hugh Lagle Water Treatment Plant," said Lambert.

"Through decommissioning of these plants, both Davie County and the Town of Mocksville will have the most reliable and economical water treatment system meeting both current and future water needs," he said.

EDA grants are awarded through a competitive process based upon the application’s merit, the applicant’s eligibility, and the availability of funds.  More information on EDA’s grant process and investment process can be found at www.eda.gov.
