Davie County Senior Games are back in action and better than ever! This year, the 29th Season of Senior Games started with a record high number of 142 registrants. This is an incredible turnout and will be the best year yet. The Senior Games Opening Ceremonies was held at RISE Indoor Sports Complex in Bermuda Run on Tuesday, March 15, where Senior Services had the ability to utilize almost all of the space and knock out not only the opening ceremony but also Basketball Shooting, Football Throw, Softball Throw, Spincasting, and the Fun Walk with a special lighting of the torch to officially open the games.
The ceremonial program was led by Senior Games Coordinator, Michelle Ellis, who made remarks on behalf of the staff and shared many highlights of the upcoming Senior Games season. She was followed with a welcome given by Interim County Manger, Mike Ruffin. County Commissioner, Benita Finney, sang the National Anthem, and Whitney Fitzsimons from Davie County Recreation and Parks leaded the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Will Marklin, Mocksville Town Mayor, shared the Spirit of Senior Games and introduced none other than the newest Senior Games Ambassador, John Bullins, who then shared about his experience at Senior Games, why he was chosen as an ambassador, and he shared how proud he is to represent Davie County Senior Games. Following Bullins, Ellis read the Senior Games Creed. Carrie Miller, SilverArts Coordinator and Senior Games Co-Coordinator, shared about SilverArts and how incredible it is that the state of North Carolina not only represents sports figures but also takes the time to represent Heritage, Visual, Performing, and Literary Arts, PLUS they recognize Cheerleading. Davie County Senior Games is proud to have the Davie Dazzlers that have competed not only at the local level but also won medals at the North Carolina State Finals. Following Miller, Lane Newsom and the RISE Staff came out to be recognized and share the overview of the day, the flow, and the time of lunch. The games officially began when Bermuda Run Town Mayor, Rick Cross, declared the official Opening of the 29th Season of Senior Games followed by the lighting of the torch and a ceremonial fun walk around the parking lot.
The Senior Games and SilverArts opening ceremony was well attended with over 60 participants. The Senior Games Season will be held from March – May. There will be events for everyone 50 or better, and you will have a blast. If you are 50 or better and see something you are interested in, give Senior Services a call at 336-753-6230 to learn more about the program! It is never too late to try something new.
