Davie County Seniors sure know how to have fun! September was national Senior Center Month and was filled with so many exciting things.
To kick off Senior Center Month, Lambert Funeral Home sponsored bingo on September 1st where everyone had a marvelous time. Belinda Totten and Joanna Darnall came home with the grand prizes of the day!
Senior Writing Club also met that day and discussed writing in a journal. Each month the Senior Writing Club meeting is held on the first Thursday at 2:00 pm at the main campus on Meroney Street.
On Tuesday, September 6, the seniors headed off to the North Carolina Zoo for a fun day of seeing lots of great animals. Day trips are offered once a month. Spots fill up quickly, and everyone enjoys traveling to new places together.
On Thursday, September 8, the seniors strapped on their seatbelts to their armchairs and took a helicopter ride over New York City with the New York Armchair Adventures program! This program featured all of the highlights across the state of New York such as the Adirondack Mountains and Niagara Falls and celebrated some fantastic food such as the New York State Pie – Grape Pie! The event was so much fun, and the participants enjoyed sharing about their personal adventures to New York.
Over the weekend, on Sunday, September 11, the Theatre Club headed out to see Hello Dolly at the Green Room in Newton, NC. The show was phenomenal!
Each month Senior Services holds a special health seminar, and on Tuesday, September 13, Novant Health’s Shannon Kimel came to speak about the Importance of Health and Exercise for Seniors! This presentation was so much fun, and she was enthusiastic about sharing information to keep everyone’s body healthy, no matter the age! Movement is key – and just walking each day will improve your body in so many ways!
On Thursday, September 15, Davie County’s NCDOT Maintenance Engineer, Robert McMath, along with Mocksville and Bermuda Run Town Representatives and Davie County Commissioners, visited Senior Services for a time to talk about the roads and other topics of interest! This was a great session with wonderful questions that the town and county officials were able to discuss with local residents.
Did you know that September 22, the first day of the season Fall, is National Fall Prevention Day? This year, on Thursday, September 22, Dr. Megan Edwards Collins joined Senior Services for a special Fall Prevention Seminar. The seminar was a great way to share information with everyone on what to do if they fall and how to prevent falls in the future. There was great discussion and even demonstrations. Everyone in attendance was able to learn something new.
Following the Fall Prevention Seminar, the Good Health Club met and talked about apples and pumpkins! They tasted a special pumpkin juice and healthy apple muffins. This meeting was led by Wade Peddycord, Senior Services intern from UNC-Charlotte. If you are interested in joining the Good Health Club, they meet the 4th Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm. Next month they will be learning about dragon fruit!
On Friday, September 23, Senior Services held their End of Summer Dance at the Brock Gym! The attendance was great, and everyone enjoyed dancing to the music.
Moving toward the end of the month, the Theatre Club met to decide where their next show trip will be! This group is so exciting and always chooses the best shows to attend. Interested in joining Theatre Club? Make sure to call Senior Services for more information!
On Thursday, September 29, Senior Services held a Bocce Clinic at Davie County Community Park where they were able to teach folks how to play despite the cold weather. Everyone had a great time! As a reminder, if you are 50 or better, you can come out and play bocce this upcoming spring season for the Davie County Senior Games!
To close out the month, Senior Services held their Senior Center Showcase Party. Unfortunately, several that registered did not attend due to Tropical Storm Ian, but those that did attend had a fantastic time. The party featured the Davie Dazzlers Cheerleading Squad, the Boogie Brigade, a demonstration of Zumba from Gladys Scott, a demonstration from Mike Orsillo and the SilverHealth and Morning Wake Up class, ending with the Davie County Singing Seniors. At this event, Carrie Miller, Senior Services Event Coordinator, also shared all of the wonderful and exciting things that Senior Services does each and every day as well as asked the audience to share about the senior center and what they love. Davie County Senior Services’ staff is appreciative to each and every person that participates at Davie County Senior Services to make the senior center a great place to be!
