It’s a Sweet, Sweet Holiday Season

Gearing Up for a Sweet, Sweet, Holiday Season

Love the holidays? Us too! Here in Davie County, NC we are gearing up for the highly-anticipated holiday season. Our small towns have super-sized fun planned, so grab your calendar and we will share our signature events and sweetest secrets.

Race Into November

‘Tis the season for getting outside! Before Old Man Winter arrives, superheroes swarm the streets of Mocksville for the annual Superhero Sprint and the Main Street 5K. The Superhero Sprint is 0.25 miles of healthy fun. Your little runners can dress up as their heroes and sprint to the finish line. Kids get their medals and families hang out for the after-party.

The Main Street 5K is an outstanding way to warm up on a chilly November morning. The race route runs from Main Street, to the Rich Park trails with the finish line at the corner of Main and Depot. The after-run social includes awards, refreshments, and live entertainment.

Register early for these races so you don’t miss out on discounts or swag!

‘Twas the Night Before…Bed Race?

Ditch the cookie-cutter holiday activities. Instead, bundle up and head to historic downtown Mocksville for the annual ‘Twas the Night Before Bed Race. What’s a bed race? Here in Davie County, it has become a tradition that kicks off the Christmas season. It’s serious fun. The bed race features specific rules, colorful decorations and a “Parade of Beds” as well as a wild ride on the Friday evening before Thanksgiving each year. Get all the details about the Mocksville bed race on the town website.

Keeping Spirits Bright

That nip in the air heralds the start of every North Carolinian’s favorite time of the year – sweater weather. We’ll be wearing our favorites and looking stylish next to the cozy heaters outside our favorite spaces in Downtown Mocksville and Bermuda Run. The cocktail specials are merry and delicious at Restaurant 101 and O’Callahan’s Irish Pub on Main Street in Mocksville. There is always something amazing on draft in the taproom at The Station on Main where lager, cider, ale, or an IPA makes life so much sweeter!

Music, craft beers, and a good wine selection are served up daily at Tanglewood Pizza Company in the Bermuda Run/Advance area. Also in that neighborhood, Davie Tavern is bringing the holiday cheer every week with Prime Rib Night and more. A spicy meal and a Margarita at La Carreta Mexican Restaurant in Advance makes the season a little more joyful!

Speaking of our favorite Davie County spaces, you have to visit one of the best vineyards in our gorgeous Yadkin Valley wine region! RayLen Vineyards and Winery is known for more than their award-winning wines- they happen to host dazzling events and live music regularly. It makes the  RayLen tasting room a wonderful place to visit for the holidays.

Did we mention dessert wines? You have to taste Forbidden, the brand new apple dessert wine from Lazy Elm Vineyard and Winery. Or try out the incomparable Lazycello. This lemon dessert wine is created with fresh squeezed lemons, then fortified with spirits. Lazycello is made in-house for a flavorful Yadkin Valley version of an Italian Limoncello!

A Sweet Escape

Shopping is an experience in downtown Mocksville, especially during November and December. Window shopping among the glow of thousands of lights and colorful holiday decorations is a simple pleasure.

Stop by The Station on Main. This historic 1920’s gas station turned modern day general store and taproom is a family and pet friendly spot to grab an old-fashioned glass bottled soda or specialty candy by the pound.  The general store carries a selection of uncommon gifts and hosts trivia night, live music, bike night and other events.

Eyes will be aglow when you take the fam to the annual Mocksville Christmas Parade. The community’s creativity shines when embellished parade floats and talented performers take over Main Street. The themes and decorations may be different every year but the excitement in the air and Santa’s sleigh are always guaranteed!

Each weekend here brings a festive adventure. Stroll through this quaint town listening to Christmas music from carolers, and then hop aboard a quaint carriage for a horse and buggy ride. Plan a visit with Santa and Mrs.Claus.  Bookmark the Mocksville website so you can check which events are coming up in November and December.

Dine in or stop for a treat at one of the many places to eat in the area. Many Davie County restaurants feature oh-so-suhweeeeet desserts from our world class local bakers. Drop in to the 4 Oaks Tavern and see what’s on tap and which band is playing this weekend. It’s the perfect spot for after hours socializing!

Christmas in the Town of Bermuda Run begins at the Gazebo in the Town Square the first weekend of December with the official lighting of the town Christmas tree.  Santa and Mrs. Claus bring the elves to visit with the little ones. The celebration includes games, crafts, music, and carriage rides too.

A Holly, Jolly, Christmas on the Farm

Davie County farmers are always vital to our community. All year long we count on them to make our meals better with fresh produce, eggs and healthy, home-grown meat. Soon our local farmers will be in holiday mode.

At Cherry Hill Farms that means they will be bringing us fresh cut NC trees, handmade wreaths, garland and bows and more.

Christmas at Koren Farms means choosing the perfect Christmas tree while toasting marshmallows for s’mores, sipping hot cocoa, and awaiting a special visit from the Grinch and his (Alpaca!) reindeer. All this begins the day after Thanksgiving!

Merry and Delicious

Let your heart be light during the crazy-busy holiday season. Davie County bakeries and their inspiring confections make Thanksgiving and Christmas desserts all yum and zero effort! Ketchie Creek Bakery or Maddie Cakes Bakery will bake the pies, cakes, and cookies while you relax and enjoy quality family time.

Start a new family dessert tradition with one (or more) of Mountain Top Cheesecakes’ specialty flavors. Their flavor and crust combinations will satisfy the most discriminating sweet-tooth!

A Full Measure makes holiday meal planning easy with homemade side dishes, pies, and baked goods. Have one of their signature Moravian Chicken Pies on hand for a quick, fresh homemade meal without the work.

Display your southern hospitality when you serve Mrs. Laura’s rolls or herbal treats. Christmas breakfast is covered when you order her all natural cinnamon rolls or drop in for pancakes at 801 Southern Kitchen. Simplify gift-giving and have Mrs. Laura’s Herbal Shortbread Collection shipped to out-of-towners. They are delicious and boxed beautifully!

The Great Indoors

Once winter hits, we love the great indoors and beginning November 18, 2022 we will be able to enjoy Mrs. Laura’s delectable, herbal sweets rain or shine at The Johnson House Bakery and Tea Room in Farmington, NC: Tea Time is from 11:30-2:30 and the bakery will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

COGNITION Davie will fill up your calendar with educational (but fun) activities that will keep the kids busy during the school breaks. The hands-on museum and makerspace will help kids learn the chemistry behind the holiday baking and teach them how to create pottery ornaments. The educators at COGNITION are always planning something great for every age including wine nights and coffee mornings for the grown-ups. We always look forward to getting their email newsletter to see what’s up!

Sweet and Thoughtful Gift Giving

Opportunities abound to begin our Christmas gift shopping early. One of our local secrets for finding unique and thoughtful gifts is the November Annual Craft Village hosted at Davie County Community Park by the Davie Craft Association! For more than half a century, this has been our go-to for locating the best pottery, artwork, hand-crafted wood, textiles and more.

Shop the Craft Village Shop for jewelry, handbags, paintings, florals, crocheted, felted, and knitted wearables, soaps, holiday ornaments and home décor. Visit the bake shop for homemade cookies, pies, bread and cakes. Food Trucks, LIVE music and entertainment will be onsite during the show.

At Koren Farms, you can search their Christmas shop for handcrafted and alpaca fiber holiday gifts for your loved ones. Lydia Jaynes Boutique has tasty gift ideas that make your winter experiences just right – wine gift bags to s’mores kits! Get directions and links to all your favorite shops here.
