January was a fun-filled month at Davie County Senior Services! The year kicked off with a day trip to the Wilkes Heritage Museum in Wilkesboro, NC on January 3rd where participants were able to learn about the history of Wilkes County and were able to tour several historic sites. Day trips happen once a month, and you don’t want to miss them!

Tech Tuesdays also kicked off strong on January 3rd. Rachel Nelson from the Davie County Public Library joins Senior Services twice a month for this program to answer any and all technology questions that you may have. Tech Tuesdays are the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month.

On Wednesday, January 4, Kelly Sloan, Services Coordinator, held a Facebook Live where she talked about the services that Davie County Senior Services offers here in the county plus the different activity kits and robotic pets available to loved ones living in Davie County with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. This video can be found on the Davie County Senior Services Facebook page if you are interested in learning more.

On Thursday, January 5, Senior Services held Ping Pong Fun Day where participants were encouraged to come out and play ping pong together to kick off the weekly ping pong open play sessions at the Brock Gym. Ping Pong is a Senior Games activity, so this is a great time to try something new, practice, and prepare for the upcoming Senior Games season.

On Monday, January 9, Davie County SilverStrikers bowling league met at the Senior Services Main Campus for a lunch to kick off the season. This lunch featured a delicious chicken noodle soup, salad, and Oreo trifle dessert. The bowlers come together to congratulate last season’s winners and select new teams for the upcoming season. The league will run for fourteen weeks, breaking for summer, then beginning again this fall.

On Tuesday, January 10, Sheila Blanton from Atrium Health’s Davie Medical Center joined Senior Services for a health seminar titled, “The Gift of Life.” She discussed blood donors and how important it is to donate the gift of life to one another!

Friday, January 13, Davie County Senior Services joined the Davie County Public Library for a Crafternoon featuring Confetti Champagne Glasses! It was so much fun. Crafternoon meets the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month.

A Badminton Clinic was held on Wednesday, January 18 at the Senior Services Brock Gym, and the participants were able to learn much information. They stretched and learned the rules and had a fantastic time playing. This year, Davie County Senior Games will offer Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles in Badminton, so be sure come out and participate. It’s never too late to try something new.

Thursday, January 19 was a fun day at Senior Services! The morning kicked off with a seminar learning about Identity Theft and Fraud and followed with a Shredding Event and Bingo! Bingo was sponsored by Mountain Valley Hospice. There will another shredding event held for the community in conjunction with SmartStart’s KidsFest at the Davie County Community Park, so be sure to gather your sensitive documents and bring them to the shredding event! This event is provided through the SHIIP program.

Speaking of Smart Start, Davie County Senior Services partners with them each quarter to bring a special program titled “Grandparents and Me” where the grandparents and grandchildren come together to read a story, have a snack, and partake in an activity together. It is an event that you don’t want to miss!

Did someone say refrigerator pickles? Yes they did! Senior Services holds What’s Cooking: Food, Fads, and Helpful Home Hacks once a month on the 4th Monday, and this month was focused on learning how to make refrigerator pickles! This activity was so much fun, and everyone got to take their jars home to test out the recipe. For more fun cooking hacks, or learning in general, be sure to sign up for the next event on February 27.

Later that week, on January 26, Senior Services held their Good Health Club lead by nutrition coordinator, Stacey Southern. They learned about all of the health benefits of carrots and tried several different carrot entrees. They meet again on February 23 at 1:00 pm!

January 27 was a day of “SNOW” Much Fun where participants joined the Senior Center for Snow carnival type games where they were invited to make snowflakes, participate in snow bowling, participate in throw the ball at the snowman, and a snow word search. Unfortunately, this party did not bring on any snow, but it was a blast that everyone enjoyed. The food consisted of mini corn dogs, adorable snowman shaped cheese balls, a veggie tray, and party mix.

Also on January 27, the Davie County Public Library held their second Crafternoon of the month where participants were invited to create a Cardinal made solely of buttons. It was so cute and so much fun!

The following Monday, the Monthly Movie brought several people out to the Senior Center for some good popcorn and a great love story. Monthly Movies are generally held on the 3rd Monday of each month unless a holiday conflicts with the program.

To close out the month, Senior Services held their quarterly Veteran’s Social where several participants enjoyed coffee, donuts, and cookies while listening to Thao Sommerville share about her experience escaping Vietnam during the war. Monthly Veteran’s Socials will begin in April.

As one can see, there’s always something going on at Davie County Senior Services, and they would be delighted to have you join in the fun. If you are 55 or better, give them a call to register for an activity or learn about all the fantastic things you can partake in! Call 336-753-6230 for more information.
