The Science of Healthcare

Davie County Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Cognition Davie and Davidson-Davie Community College are partnering together during the month of February to present the science of healthcare.

Students in 5th-8th grades can register now to learn the basics of medical assisting and patient assessments, blood typing and bench science, as well as CPR training and EMS professions. All ages are invited to a session to learn about different careers in the medical field like medical laboratory technology, surgical technology, pharmacy technology, and more.

“With all our classes, we want to promote exploration, learning, and creative thinking for kids and families in Davie and the surrounding counties,” said Cognition’s Operations Manager, Kyle Herrington. “Our goal with these classes is to provide experiences that spark curiosity, teach about opportunities right here in Davie that folks might not have known about, and get kids hands-on with the science of healthcare. There are fascinating allied health jobs that we never get to see because we don’t get exposure to those careers. We want kids to have the opportunity to explore those as an option and learn why they are so important to our community. “

Career Exploration & More

He explained that this partnership with Davidson-Davie Community College (DDCC) to bring healthcare science to downtown Mocksville is a result of several different conversations. “Cognition had recently met with the healthcare administration in Davie about how to bring awareness and education about allied health professions to kids and youth in the county. Around the same time, an instructor from DDCC reached out to Cognition to learn more about the programs we were providing and to talk about areas of a potential partnership. The February classes were a perfect fit since DDCC already has expertise in Emergency Medical Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technology and so much more. Davie County EMS will also be joining to give kids the opportunity to explore an ambulance and meet EMS providers,” said Herrington.

He hopes that participants will leave these classes with an increased interest in science and healthcare. “If someone has never used a microscope, met an EMS provider, or known their blood type before one of these classes, just having that bit of information and experience can open a door to so many different interests.”

DDCC faculty and staff will be providing instruction for all the classes. Davie County EMS will be on-site so that kids can explore an ambulance, meet EMS providers, learn about the profession, and get to learn CPR techniques on mannequins and high-fidelity simulators (life-like models that simulate real-life scenarios).

There will be four different classes throughout the month:
