Derrick Wold, director of the Davie County Public Library, celebrates the introduction of the Bermuda Run/East Davie remote book lockers during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 1 hosted by the Davie County Chamber of Commerce. Community members were invited to participate in demonstrations of how the locker system works.
Residents of Bermuda Run/East Davie can now pick up their library materials closer to home. The Davie County Public Library has installed a series of remote lockers for books and other library items in the Davidson-Davie Community College Annex next to Bermuda Run Town Hall, 120 Kinderton Boulevard, Suite 110.
These lockers will allow residents to go to the Davie County Library website, sign in with their library card to reserve a book online, and have it delivered to Bermuda Run. All you need is a Davie County Library card and access to their website.
“The library is thankful for its partnership with the Town of Bermuda Run and the Davidson-Davie Community College (DDCC) in Bermuda Run to house the lockers and provide access to the resources. The lockers will be used to store materials requested by the community, and to also offer a place where materials can be picked up conveniently,” said Derrick Wold, director of the Davie County Public Library.
How It Works
Any Davie County Library member will be able to use the lockers.
Reserve your books through the Davie County Public Library website.
The library staff will assign a specific locker that will hold those books on reserve.
You will receive an email indicating that your materials are ready for pickup.
Go up to the locker and scan your library card.
The assigned locker door will open and your books will be waiting for you.
Take your receipt so that you know when the books are due back.
*The library staff is working on a step-by-step video of the entire process that will soon be available on the library’s website and Facebook page.
Library Seeking Volunteers to Staff Remote Site
The library’s initial goal is to have the remote site open from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and is seeking volunteers to make that possible. For now, patrons will need to call the library once they receive an email that their materials are ready for pick up to arrange a time for a staff member to meet them. If you are interested in volunteering, please stop by the library or call 336-753-6030.

Background on the Remote Library Lockers Project
Since the summer of 2018, Wold has had his sights set on bringing remote lockers to Davie County. He believed these lockers would make the library’s services more accessible to residents who do not have a library in their immediate vicinity, like those in Bermuda Run/East Davie.
With the price tag of these lockers reaching and surpassing $45,000, the Davie County Public Library team began to research ways to fund this project. Wold and his team applied for, and were awarded, an ADAPTS grant from the State Library of North Carolina for $45,000. SLNC awards support local library projects that target high-need communities to address digital inclusion, expand digital network access, purchase internet-accessible devices, provide related technical support in response to the coronavirus, and support community needs.
The library has also added a dropbox outside the DDCC Annex building for returning any library materials, and Wold said it is working on adding Wifi at the site so that patrons can use their personal cellphones or tablets to access the library’s full catalog of materials.
Throughout this process, the Davie County Library was able to work with the Town of Bermuda Run and the Davidson-Davie Community College to make this project successful. Additionally, the library worked with GLAST Graphics to wrap the lockers.
What This Brings to the Community
“One of the questions that we get is what does getting a remote locker system do for the community? The answer to this is that it gives us the opportunity to provide a service and show there is a desire and a need to have a physical library presence in the Bermuda Run/East Davie area,” Wold said. “This provides a template to provide service to underserved community members in Davie County.”
”We are very appreciative of Derrick Wold’s proactive initiative to provide extended access of library services to the Bermuda Run/East Davie area. The Town looks forward to partnering with DDCC and the Davie County Public Library to provide volunteers to staff the kiosk area. It’s a great testament to fully leveraging the resources of multiple agencies,” said Lee Rollins, Bermuda Run Town Manager.
