Town of Cooleemee recently issued the following announcement.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded more than $105,000 in youth literacy grants to North Carolina teachers, libraries and nonprofit organizations, including $2,500 to Cooleemee Elementary School.
The grants aim to support youth literacy programs in the communities Dollar General serves. Grant funding is provided to assist in implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs; purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives; and, purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs.
“At Dollar General, we’re committed to being here for what matters most to the communities we call home,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer and Dollar General Literacy Foundation board member. “The urgency to support childhood literacy has never been greater, and we are honored to support the teachers, school officials, library staff and a network of nonprofits working every day to ensure the next generation is able to build the skills necessary to thrive and achieve their ambitions.”

A comprehensive list of grant recipients may be found online at DGLiteracy.org. The grants awarded to North Carolina organizations are expected to positively impact the lives of more than 9,720 residents.
This program is in addition to Dollar General and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s partnership with DonorsChoose which will fund $1.45 million in literacy projects posted by teachers on DonorsChoose.org. These funds will provide much-needed tools and resources in underserved schools where the vast majority of students receive Free or Reduced-Price Lunch.
